PESA Act 1996
 
The Provisions of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA), extends the Panchayat system to Scheduled Areas and recognizes the traditions, customs, and self-governance of tribal communities. It vests significant powers and responsibilities in the Gram Sabha as the fundamental unit of local self-governance. It ensures the principle of "Abua Dishom—Abua Raj."
